Polymer coated soybeans could double-crop wheat and soy
An agronomist from Purdue tests a biodegradable polymer seed coating allowing soybeans to be sown between standing wheat in late spring. The coating delays germination by about two weeks, enabling both crops in one field and potentially boosting income by about 50 dollars per acre. If viable, coating may expand to northern Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and beyond. The project is backed by Landec Corp and Intellicoat with plans to commercialize in 2002 and possibly add insecticides.
