Surge in Students Strains Urbana and Yellow Springs Classes

An unexpected student surge at Urbana High School overfills social studies and English classes with more than 35 pupils. Principal George Seaton II and superintendent staff plan hiring to ease the crunch as enrollment nears 1,260 on opening day, well above projections. Yellow Springs schools report 27 students per class in upper grades but 20 in early grades, prompting potential staffing tweaks though not urgent.

Apartment fire damages building on East Patrick Street

Firefighters say improperly discarded smoking materials ignited furniture in a second floor apartment above The Deli and Frederick Craftworks at 55 East Patrick Street. No one was inside the apartment. The Deli and Frederick Craftworks remain open. The awning was damaged but repaired and smoke has cleared. A Fort Detrick firefighter spotted the blaze and a customer alerted staff. Continued on Page A-10.

Frederick County 250th Parade Heads Downtown Sunday

A grand parade celebrating Frederick County’s 250th anniversary will start at 2 p.m. Sunday at West Seventh and North Market, marching south to the square then onto Patrick Street and Bentz Street to Carroll Parkway. More than 150 units, including bands and floats, will participate with descendants of founding families as grand marshals in period dress.

Frederick native recalls last big parade and 250th celebration

City resident Harry Elmer Crutchley, 78, who drove for late artist Helen Smith during Frederick's 1996 250th parade, recalls that event from South Carroll Street. He plans to watch the upcoming parade but may travel out of town. Crutchley’s memories include East Sixth Street, North Market Street, and watching horses shoeing at his grandfather’s blacksmith shop.

Brooks candidate with past assault charges history
