Holiday Toll Sets Record For Labor Day Deaths
Violent deaths during the 78 hour Labor Day period reached 658, a record high. Traffic mishaps killed 461, drownings accounted for 97, with 100 more from plane crashes fires and falls. Ned H Dearborn of the National Safety Council blamed a few reckless drivers for the toll while warning overall danger was higher than forecasts. The council had projected 225 traffic deaths for a non holiday weekend, later revising to 500 with early casualties driving the surge.
