The Sept 4 air raid by thirteen Zeppelins over eastern counties caused limited damage and two aircraft shot down. One airship burst into flames near London while others were driven off, with casualty reports initially stating one man and one woman killed and injuries to thirteen.
An official statement describes a raid by thirteen airships. Eleven men women and two children injured. Twenty five houses damaged in metropolitan district with water mains cut and three horses killed. One airship burst over Enfield area. wreckage and crew bodies recovered. Other two ships driven off. many bombs dropped across East Anglia and southeast counties with uncertain casualty figures.
President Wilson signed the eight hour bill passed by congress to avert the threatened strike of railroad employees. The order to mobilize 400,000 workers and halt traffic was rescinded after senate approval, as rail leaders denounced the measure while the president called it a climactic success aiding business and the Democratic party. The bill's passage spurred forecasts of higher operating costs for 225 railways, roughly $60 million additional annually.
In Perth Amboy New Jersey Acting on Mayor Garretsons orders police halted main trolley tracks with street carts and water wagons blocking the line. Over 5000 passengers were forced to walk as the public service corporation refused to move its main line to side streets. Police reserves were called out amid large crowds. Congress may adjourn on September 7 with Senate leaders signaling likely action and opposition to Ow ens corrupt practices bill.
