Bulgaria declares war on Romania as Rumanian troops seize key Transylvanian industrial centers around Petroseny and the Tatalunga valley near Kronstadt. Rumanians push deeper into Transylvania while a Hungarian force masss on the Danube to attack Bulgaria, with Russian fleets shelling Constanza.
Reports from September 2 describe Rumanian forces crossing into Transylvania, triggering panic in Hungary as eastern towns and villages are hurriedly evacuated. Repressive measures target Romanian priests and teachers amid fears of a broader collapse of the front.
Amid reports from Petrograd on September 2, the Russian statement claims 289 officers and 16,591 men captured on the western Russian front, including 2,400 Germans. Washington Sept 2 The Adamson eight hour day bill cleared the House by 239 to 56 and moves to the Senate. It would set January 1 1917 as the start and empower the Interstate Commerce Commission to fix railroad wage schedules subject to later review. Overtime would be paid pro rata with exemptions for small railroads and electric interurban lines.
Elkton Md Sept 1 a large touring car crashed through a guard rail on Union avenue bridge Havre de Grace. Mrs E M Jewett of Boston aged 40 was killed and Mrs B Hotchkiss W P Haff and Henry GM of Richmond Va and Charles Bedford chauffeur were seriously injured. The car fell twenty feet to the railroad tracks. Jewett’s neck was broken. Injured rushed to Havre de Grace hospital.
