Featured goods include Petrolem Jelly two for five cents, Boys shirts, enamel kettle, knives and forks set, coat hangers, men’s and children’s apparel, gloves, percalex, Lisle gloves, sewing oil, soaps, and more all offered at special Saturday prices.
In Sonora California the Calaveras group of giant trees faces fire threat as a blaze started from a log haul parie spreads toward the grove. Rangers settlers and hotel staff fight the flames to save the area and the hotel with the great dead “mother of the forest” looming as a torch.
New Jersey Governor Fort plans an immediate inquiry into the shooting of Charles Boyle Roberts Jr on the Atlantic City boardwalk. He will coordinate with Atlantic City authorities and consider state assistance while withholding specifics of possible action.
Baltimore dispatch reports Charles B Roberts Jr of Baltimore believed dead from a boardwalk shooting last week in Atlantic City. Hospital authorities deny death but a director notes the patient is in a coma.
Richmond Virginia September 8 A Black laborer named John Henry Johnson from Prince George county who digs in the fields for a living sent William Jennings Bryan ten dollars from his slender earnings to the campaign fund. The Virginia papers are using the incident to spur wavering Democrats.
A nude wild man fled through Hamilton township areas for a week before a posse of constables captured him near Trenton New Jersey. He resisted fiercely, was bound in a blanket, and jailed in a padded cell awaiting investigation. He was found in Edward Phillips barn just outside the city and is held at the county jail.
Charles Hall of Huntingdon Pa died in Harrisburg hospital after a Newport railroad injury. Rear Admiral Henry Glaas U S N retired died at Paso Robles health resort from heart failure post operation. Vina Wood eleven saved her ten year old brother at Port Huron Mich and risked her life to rescue younger brother Clayton who drowned.
In Scranton Pennsylvania on September 1 two women, Mrs. Adem Kavalko and Mrs. Anox Cordiach, wives of miners, were shot on a Kavalko porch during a clash as state police charged striking non unionists at No 1 colliery Erle company. The shooting, described as accidental by police, is being investigated by County Detective Rafter.
Newark girl Huth Miller Foster 18 and Joseph Foster Jr of Newark were secretly wed by Rev. Percy Borinchio at Ocean Grove after passing the parsonage in bathing suits. The bride recalls Joe proposed and they marched in for the ceremony before the minister. They plan November nuptials but wed early. A second item notes Daniel Cox jailed in Harrisburg for nonpayment of taxes in Steelton.
