Debate on ball meeting canceled amid controversy

Frederick Mayor Jim Grimes canceled a closed door meeting with residents about the Sabere and Roses Ball ahead of the 20th anniversary celebration. The move followed poor turnout and a complaint by The Frederick News-Post to the state attorney general alleging an illegal closed meeting by the mayor and Board of Aldermen.

Frederick marks 250th with three day city celebration

Frederick plans a three day 250th anniversary weekend from Sept 8 to 10 featuring a Sabers and Roses Ball at the Francis Scott Key Holiday Inn, Civil War re enactments near U S 15 340, a grand parade with Helen Smith as marshal, a city park birthday party with a Boog Powell softball game, a laser show, and rare viewing of Jubal Early ransom notes at City Hall. The events are sponsored by The Frederick News Post Frederick Cablevision and Farmers and Mechanics National Bank with participation by Eustalco Aluminum Co. and USPS clocking the celebration amid battles parades and vintage crafts. The weekend also marks the cancellation of stamps with the event logo and includes a birthday cake and a Navy band performance.

Suspect arrested in assault death at John Hanson Apartments

Frederick City Police report the second murder arrest in 48 hours as Maurice Devon Bailey, 20, of Washington DC, is charged with first degree murder and related counts for the Saturday night assault on Roger Lynn Baker, 34, at John Hanson Apartments. Baker died later at a Baltimore trauma center. Bailey was seized in the complex courtyard where the attack occurred.

Koenig seeks standby counsel in high stakes murder case

Rock climbing on an urban wall at Clipper City Gym

In Baltimore's Woodberry district the Clipper City Rock Gym occupies a former locomotive factory now used for climbing. Owner Jim Ellis and manager Brian Flowers describe a 60-foot lead wall, 30-foot walls, a 12-foot bouldering cave, and a loft with varied routes for strength and endurance.

Fire Escape Coffee House a Christian haven in Frederick

The Fire Escape Coffee House and Juice Bar at 74S Market St claims to be Frederick's only Christian atmosphere eatery with Bible study on Thursdays and live Christian and contemporary bands on Fridays and Saturdays. Ten percent of proceeds aid the needy, run by Lynn Dealey and ministers Dennis and Elaine Stewart, opening last March in a boarded town area. Local volunteers include students from Frederick High and Gov. Thomas Johnson High, who describe the cafe as a welcoming, faith-centered alternative to bars. Regulars enjoy chess and conversation, with bands booked through November and a policy of avoiding television to encourage personal interaction.
