Preservation group funds protect South Mountain site
Maryland officials approve 51000 to support three Frederick County towns for park land development and purchase and grant 318700 for a perpetual conservation easement on the White House Inn at South Mountain. The Interior Highway Administration funds the easement through a 1991 federal act enabling transportation enhancements. The White House Inn, a historic 18 year old stone house near Old National Pike, once hosted Union troops in the Battle of South Mountain. The easement blocks new construction and sets restoration plans for next year. The league began mortgage payments, aided by a 1991 trust grant, after acquiring the 17.5 acre property for 325000.
