Eight Counties To Break With Tradition When Schools Open
Maryland counties move toward integration as the Supreme Court ruling ends segregation though most counties open with segregated systems. Baltimore County leads with 28 of 90 schools operating integrated and Montgomery and Prince Georges plan mixed attendance, while several Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland counties stay segregated. In Anne Arundel and Carroll there are limited integrated schools and transfers based on merit, with bans on broad change until later in the year.
