Philippines chief open to Japan defense pact
Baltimore September 1 President Elipidio Quirino of the Philippine Islands said the country would be willing to have Japan as a partner in a Pacific defense pact. He spoke at Johns Hopkins Hospital while recovering from kidney stone surgery. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Frederick County Volunteer Firemen's Association elected officers for 1951-52 during a joint conven tion with the men. Badly Hurt On Route 40 Collision Near Eckhart
In Frostburg on U S 40 early today a Washington couple suffered serious injuries when their car collided with another at the Parkersburg road junction in Eckhart. Robert P. Masten, 33, and his wife Ruby Jo Masten, 23, were hospitalized with severe injuries and possible fractures. their two young daughters escaped injury. James Hunter, 23, of Cumberland, the other driver, had chest injuries and lacerations. State trooper Raymond P. McGuire will continue the investigation. Also, W P Gilford of Hagerstown was named master mechanic for the Elkins division of the Western Maryland Railway, succeeding George R Lyming who retired for ill health.
