Murder and jewels trigger peril on an ocean voyage
The narrator recalls Sir John Danvers dying after a jewel laden parcel is entrusted to him. On a long voyage to England the narrator befriends a young American Carr and learns of stolen sapphires while two sinister men threaten their safety. In London the jewels prove a perilous anchor as a burglary and a violent escape loom, with the memory of Sir John and the mystery of the bag weighing on all.
