Commissioner Hatem Talks Insurance Rates Approach

Maryland’s new Insurance Commissioner Thomas J. Hatem told Frederick County agents he is open to discussing rating procedures and is assembling a group to study insurance rate determinations. He traced the department’s history from clerical origins to a modern agency with a million dollar budget and about 22 million in annual tax and license revenue. The luncheon marked his first area visit in his new post and he emphasized collaboration with industry to address rate issues and insurer solvency. In a separate note, Mack Truck Co. plans to lay off about 300 of 1,500 workers at its Hagerstown plant due to a heavy trucks production cutback.
