The 1900 1901 fishing season is practically over at Gloucester Massachusetts with fatalities and losses. sixty two men killed or drowned and nine vessels lost. The year’s casualties exceed last year, which was the smallest in 23 years.
A bloody race clash at Duncan's Chapel Balltown La ends with nine blacks killed and white casualties including one dead and others wounded. Over 1,000 armed men converge. many negroes flee into swamps. The verdict: further violence ends with no more deaths and a quieting of tensions.
Governor Aycock opened the Negro State Fair in Raleigh urging African Americans to build a self supporting community founded on culture intelligence and virtue in an address delivered on October 30.

Roanoke Va Oct 30 Dr HH Dillard colored was arrested for obtaining a horse and buggy under false pretenses. He is wanted at Reidsville NC and will be sent there. A native of Henry county Va he claimed wealth and gave drafts to the daughter of his old slave master. He deposited 55000 in Australian pounds in a Roanoke bank which proved worthless.
Scranton miners from about fifty collieries marched in a Mitchell day parade estimated at 10 000, passing a point for over an hour. The 400 street car strikers led the line with strong ovation as imported workers stayed off to avoid trouble.
