RUFFING A CLUB SLAM FIXES HAND IN BRIDGE PLAY

In a bridge article a four no trump bid ends with South pursuing a small slam after North has no aces. The maneuver hinges on careful timing and avoiding an early shift to clubs.

Legislative Act To Promote Dead Man

Baltimore October 27 The attorney general ruled that it would take an act of the Legislature to restore Patrolman James J. Purcell to sergeant after his demotion and death. Purcell, who had been demoted for accepting a $75 gift while in custody on tax charges, was fatally shot by a burglar. Gov Mechled urged reinstatement, saying he would have earned back his stripes had he lived. An act by the General Assembly is deemed necessary. Purcell’s widow would receive $3,450 annually if promoted versus $3,075 now.
