Absolve Blame in Death of Unionville Pedestrian
Magistrate Edward J. Smith found 18 year old Walter Eugene Harmon not guilty of reckless driving in a fatal South Market street crash that killed 82 year old William N. Ecker of Unionville three days after the October 7 incident. Witnesses and officer Swomley supported that Ecker darted from between parked cars and was struck near the Diamond Bowling alleys. Swomley said Harmon slowed but could not avoid the impact as Ecker half ran into the right bumper and was flipped over the hood. The accident occurred around 9 p.m. Harmon's brother testified they were northbound about 20 mph and Ecker did not stop. Swomley labeled the victim at fault based on witnesses’ accounts. Two other reckless driving cases from September 10 were found not guilty by Officer Arnold Simmons.
