Poultry waste plant could need subsidies on Delmarva
A report for the Coalition of Northeast Governors says a 25 megawatt poultry litter plant near Laurel, Delaware could require up to 6 million in annual subsidies and up to 10 million in county bonds. Proponents cite economic and environmental gains from converting waste to fertilizer pellets while opponents warn subsidies may be premature. Delaware farmers produced about 289000 tons of poultry litter last year from roughly 250 million chickens raised mainly in Sussex County.
