Aberfan disaster toll climbs as inquiry ordered
Police said 135 bodies had been recovered by Sunday night. Robert Price of the National Coal Board cited an underground spring in the mine refuse area near the bottom, with water buildup causing a sudden eruption. Willam Shepherd compared the water build-up to a water bomb. Experts hesitant that the spring alone caused the avalanche, citing heavy rainfall as a factor. About 50 more bores could be buried under mud and coal sludge. Nearly all victims were children, most of the village wiped out. Prime Minister Wilson ordered a national inquiry with Lord Justice Edmund Davies to head it. Lord Roberts of the Coal Board said checks would be run on 500 other piles in Wales.
