Byron aids compromise on defense bill panel recommends cuts
Washington lawmakers work toward reconciling House and Senate versions of the fiscal defense authorization bill this week led by Rep Beverly Byron. The panel proposes shifting Medicare premium costs to the Defense Department and raising the catastrophic health insurance premium threshold to 15000 to cover 55 million of the 390 million shortfall while deferring remaining savings to military operation costs. Byron notes Gramm Rudman limits blocked a 4 percent military pay raise, leaving some retirees with higher pension than active duty pay.
