Advice From Marine Band Director On Musical Specialization
Col Albert Schoepper, director of The President’s Own Marine Band, urges single instrument focus over broad study. He explains auditions favor high proficiency on one or two instruments and notes many applicants lack specialization, reducing chances of selection. The band auditions about four new members weekly and Schoepper traces changes in musical education through the years. He joined the Marine Band as a violinist in 1934 and became director in 1955.
