TV execs ponder soap opera sex in daytime drama
SANTA MONICA AP executives from the soap genre met for a two day summit to discuss portraying sex responsibly in daytime stories. Population Communications International sponsored talks with Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders and Jane Fonda, while PCI chairman Sonny Fox urged writers to consider population control in plots. The discussion highlighted the soaps daily reach and potential influence on teen expectations, noting studies showing numerous sexual references per episode and mixed messaging on sex and consequences.
