Brazilian cesium accident sparks medical aid effort in Goiania
Oak Ridge doctors describe a severe radiation incident in Goiania Brazil where a glowing cesium capsule from a discarded therapy device caused widespread exposure. Ten patients endured acute radiation syndrome including a 6 year old girl who ingested cesium and faced internal bleeding. Experts from Oak Ridge joined Brazilian teams, using Prussian blue to reduce cesium and estimating highest doses around 600 to 800 rads, with several deaths possible but many survivors scarred and at risk for cancer.
