United Givers Fund totals reach 43 765 dollars, 18.2 percent of goal, lagging behind last year’s 71 618. Many large companies and groups still outstanding. Division figures include CFC 2 787 26.2 percent, Loaned Executives 11 465 9.2 percent, Small Business 2 728 11.4 percent.
The Frederick County Pomona Grange passed resolutions at Thurmont urging legislation to end strikes and require welfare recipients to work. Proposals also seek to abolish or switch daylight saving time, restrict 18 year olds’ adult duties, and strengthen arbitration in labor disputes. The group advocates training for welfare recipients and linking work to welfare to promote self sufficiency. The meeting hosted by Thurmont Grange involved about 60 grangers from nine chapters.
Frederick County Delegate Wallace Hutton told the County Council of PTAs at North Frederick Elementary School that state takeover would erode local control and reduce education funding. He urged focusing on local government and balancing education with health as a key government priority.

The Maryland State Grange begins its 79th annual meeting at the Francis Scott Key Hotel with about 400 expected attendees. The opening includes a memorial service, officer reports, and a packed afternoon with tax, endowment, and women’s activity updates, culminating in awards and finals.
The Washington Post reports the American Bar Association committee found Judge Mildred Lillie and Herschel Friday not qualified for the high court. Senate sources say Friday is likely under consideration and Mrs. Lillie could be nominated for the second vacancy.
State and local officials and industry representatives gathered Wednesday to discuss compliance with Frederick City's pollution ordinance aimed at reducing organic waste into sewers. Senator Smelser called the session an effort to coordinate actions across agencies as J O’Neill Jenkins of Jenkins Food Corp and Capital Milk Producers Cooperative protest the rules as too strict and require rapid pretreatment of waste water before sewer entry.
Postal authorities investigate a deliberate fire at a mailbox on Catoctin Avenue and South Jefferson Street. About 15 to 17 pieces of mail are salvageable. a roll of film and three letters were destroyed. fire reported 3 22 p m. United Fire Company responded.
Fort Detrick faces a job uncertainty as a private contractor may operate the new cancer research program. Local 174 union leader Leo Martin says hundreds of support workers are essential to maintain labs and equipment, with many long‑time employees at risk of losing status and benefits. If kept, they could join the program with existing civil service protections or be subcontracted by the private operator.
