Conservation Talk Highlights Farmer City Roles and Water Needs
George T. Swartz spoke to the Lions Club at the Francis Scott Key Hotel on topics linking farmer and city life in conservation. He stressed soil, water, and woodland care, noting contour strip farming can raise yields by 10 to 20 percent and city demand supports land stewardship through federal programs. He warned that highways, drive ins, and housing reduce productive land, urging careful siting of development and continued use of proven practices. The talk covered agency roles and the need for urban support of rural conservation.

Crash scene recalls deadly highway disaster and wedding contrast
The article recalls a highway crash in which five died, with photos showing a damaged truck, scattered sheet metal, and a toppled utility pole. It mentions survivors in Frederick Memorial Hospital and a driver named Goins. It also covers a 46th wedding anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Kline with extensive family attendance and a wheel chair bound bride. It notes a Hood College lecture by Rabbi David Schwartz, Iran’s premier seeking defense pact approval, a failed reconciliation over weight in a divorce case, and a note on the oolachan fish used as lamp fuel.
