Congress Ends Year With Record Peacetime Spending

The 82nd Congress closes its first session amid the largest peacetime spending in U. S. history, with about 91 billion dollars proposed for the year and a possible 5.75 billion annual tax boost. Major actions include foreign aid, economic controls, extended drafts, and groundwork for universal military training. Senate debates on Europe troops and MacArthur dismissal shaped public talk, but produced no decisive legislation. The session ends as lawmakers anticipate return on Jan 3 for the next year.
