Second skid row candidate enters 6th District contest
ANNAPOLIS AP The Armistead Hotel near Baltimore's striptease area produced a second skid row candidate for Maryland's 6th Congressional District seat in Western Maryland. Melvin Perkins, the Republican in the race, maneuvered Armistead resident Joan Marie Smith to file as a Democratic write-in candidate as the district awaits the late Rep Goodloe Byron's replacement. Smith, an 11 year divorcee unemployed for years, said Perkins urged her to run so she could fill his shoes if something happened to him. Perkins intends to use Smith as a debate opponent for TV exposure while Byron's widow Beverly Byron faces Perkins in November. State election officials said Smith's filing would not place her name on the ballot. The move drew sharp criticism from State Sen. Victor Cushwa who called it disgusting and a black eye for Maryland.
