Differ On Life Of Satellite Across Earth Orbit
Smithsonian scientists in Cambridge estimate the Sputnik rocket shell has about 100 days of life left as the satellite duo continues to circle. They note the payload loses altitude while gaining speed, with 15 daily orbits yielding a daily one minute speed increase. NASA observers report visibility of the rocket over Cambridge and Cambridge watchers saw Sputnik itself only once. The Science advisor says US missile progress remains essential for future defense.
