Investigators say 18th Century Prentis mansion near Thurmont was entered between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Garnett Prentis reported about 30 valuable silver items, a TV, and $50 in cash missing from dining room and library. Detective Cpl. William F. Davis leads the inquiry.
The city council approved three traffic lights to be installed at Kline Boulevard West Patrick Street Rosemont Avenue West Second Street and at Hood College Dill Avenue. Chief Main urged safety for pedestrians. Brunner named probationary patrolman. Freight contracts awarded for a pickup truck and cab chassis at 3494.31 and a truck body 522.17. Planning officials invited County to discuss land use plan. Mayor authorized to pay bills 7969.04.
Six year old Larry Condon suffered first and second degree burns to his face when a barrel of paint remover exploded in his backyard near Ridgeville. He was reported in satisfactory condition at Frederick Memorial Hospital after being transported by Mt. Airy ambulance around 5 45 p m.
Detroit AP reports AMC and United Auto Workers reached a late agreement removing profit sharing as a major obstacle. Strike began at AMC plants in Milwaukee and Kenosha as negotiators extended progress sharing talks amid a midnight deadline. The stock market opened higher in New York as small investors bought shares following Thursday's downturn.
AP reports Communist China announced it exploded its first atom bomb in western China on October 16 1964. The statement cited by New China News Agency said the test was conducted successfully and that China must develop nuclear weapons to counter growing threats from the United States. Moscow had just ousted Khrushchev, reshaping global Communist leadership and influencing regional power dynamics.
