Reserve Clause Is Under Fire
Washington owner Clark Griffith testified before a House subcommittee that he once violated the reserve clause to help found the American League but favors changing the penalty for players who jump leagues. He argued competition is essential and warned against players moving between leagues. The hearing also disclosed a secret 1946 MacPhail document critical of baseball governance, and other testimony covered a players guild idea and umpire firing amid internal disputes.
