War Correspondents Arch marks 100th anniversary

War correspondents and admirers gathered in Burkittsville to honor George Alfred Townsend on the 100th anniversary of the War Correspondents Arch. John Howard underscored the arch as a symbol of freedom and the people’s right to know. The arch, built in 1896, lists 157 Civil War correspondents, artists and photographers.

War correspondent Arnett speaks on danger at 100th anniversary

CNN war correspondent Peter Arnett told a Burkittsville crowd that covering conflicts remains dangerous. He recalled Vietnam danger and a 1966 incident when an officer died after bullets struck his chest as Arnett stood nearby.

At Emmitsburg the 15th National Memorial Service for Fallen Firefighters remembered three Pittsburgh firefighters killed in a Valentine's Day 1995 structure fire. Frederick County targets teen tobacco use with education efforts

Officials in Frederick County push school and law enforcement efforts to curb teen tobacco use amid rising statistics. In 1996, 125 civil citations were issued to youths for tobacco use, up from 72 in the prior year, under the Maryland Youth Access Law. Despite health ed programs, by grade eight 256 percent reported cigarette use in a 1994 survey, prompting continued cessation efforts and a pilot Tobacco Awareness program that helped about 35 volunteers with five remaining smoke free.

Walkersville Woman Killed in Head-On Daysville Crash

A 59-year-old Walkersville woman, Shirley Ann Cox, died Sunday morning when her car collided head-on with a pickup driven by Patrick Darren Zaharoff, 32, on Daysville Road. Zaharoff and his 7-year-old son were hospitalized. the child was released and the father remained in stable condition.

Man killed in collision near state line

Gettysburg Pa man Glenn Shields aged 34 was killed when he attempted an overtake in a no passing zone and collided with an oncoming vehicle on Md 140 at the Pennsylvania line Saturday night. Three other persons were injured according to state police reports.
