Nine Months And Fined $500 In Taverns Case Near Mt Airy
Circuit Court heard a raid on a tavern near Mt Airy last May. Roger C. Lindsay received a sentence of nine months in the House of Correction and a $5500 fine for keeping a gaming table. John Samuel Wesley Ralph Spurrier drew three months and a $250 fine for selling alcoholic beverages without a license. Associate Judge Patrick M Schnauffer warned that unpaid fines would lead to jail time after the term in custody. Harry T Wilkins testified about the undercover raid and the basement club operation, including a 78.3 proof whiskey sale and a $2.50 charge for a half pint. Sheriff's deputies later conducted a May 14 raid, finding beer, whiskey, punchboards, and slot machines. Both Lindsay and Spurrier denied wrongdoing, and another club member testified similarly. The court found Lindsay’s scheme and Spurrier’s role as connected. John Tibbs, a Rockville landscaper, was found guilty on false pretense with sentence pending, after checks for $2500 and $1500 were dishonored for insufficient funds. Tibbs later paid $2500, the tractor was repossessed, and damages were cited.
