Neglect Of Dry Dairy Cow Easy And Costly
College Park Oct 13. Dairymen Floyd Arnold and Geo Hyatt Jr of the University of Maryland warn that neglecting the dry period for dairy cows is costly. Cows need about eight weeks dry, not less than six, to rebuild minerals and nutrients. Two thirds of calf growth occurs in the last three months of gestation. High protein feeds are unnecessary. high quality hay pasture and silage form the basis. Rations depend on body condition, from eight to ten pounds daily for very thin cows to two to four pounds for others. A common fitting ration of corn barley oats bran linseed or cottonseed meal salt and bone meal is effective, with feeding reduced one to two weeks before calving to a bulky laxative mix.
