Sulfa Drug Use Abused, Says Norman Tobias At Meeting
Norman Tobias of St Louis told the 38th annual Southern Medical Association meeting that sulfa drugs are being grossly abused by doctors in treating skin diseases. He said physicians overuse sulfonamides to cover diagnostic shortfalls and that babies are even smeared with sulfa ointments. He urged restraint, noting sulfamides are valuable for acute infections but limited for chronic skin conditions, and that mouth use should be brief. He favored hot boric packs as an effective alternative for skin applications.
