Death ruled an accidental overdose of sleeping pills
Oakland, Calif. Oct. 13 The death of Evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson in her hotel room last September 27 was ruled an accidental overdose of a barbital compound sleeping tablets by a coroner after medical testimony. Pathologist Dr. Mary Ruth Oldt said the stomach contents indicated death from shock and respiratory failure due to overdosage, with a kidney ailment contributing. Coroner Mark Lo Emerson noted the possibility of forgetfulness leading to taking too many pills, while Dr. Oldt added the kidney condition could worsen with such a drug. Chief Deputy Coroner Bernard Sungerz testified about McPherson’s son, then an infant, and his lack of knowledge about his mother taking pills.
