Historical building clinic scheduled in Rockville

The Maryland Historical Trust and Montgomery Preservation Inc sponsor a two day clinic for historic building owners needing rehabilitation or maintenance help. A slide lecture on architectural significance and historic finishes is set for Oct 29 at the Red Brick Courthouse, with free public admission and pre registration required. A second day Oct 30 offers private site visits to 4 to 6 buildings in Montgomery County to address deterioration and design issues.

Glider makes surprise visit to Lewistown farm

A glider from Fairfield, Pa., landed in a Lewistown area pasture at 2:15 pm on Monday to avoid rough air. No injuries or damage occurred as resident Susan Wachter helped secure the craft before the pilot continued to his van. The event was linked to a regional Oktoberfest distance contest sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Association, though it is unclear if the glider pilot was entered.

Christian Brothers transfers property to pension fund

Residents calm as 250 acre farm near Md 85 and Lily Pens Road is revealed as a cash transfer from Christian Brothers Provincialate in Adamstown to Ammendale Normal Institute in Prince George's County. Officials say the land remains under Christian Brothers control and no physical changes will occur, with 300 acres held since 1984. The deal leaves Ammendale Normal with 70 acres and the provincialate with 50 acres after prior transfers and leases.

Kramer to host budget forum at Martin Luther King High

Montgomery Bureau reports Citizens are invited to speak about taxes and budget issues at a budget forum on Thursday October 22 from 7 30 to 9 30 p m at Martin Luther King Jr High School in Germantown County Executive Sidney Kramer will attend and county department representatives will answer questions Speakers may talk for three minutes without pre registration Kramer will outline his proposed programs for the 1989 fiscal year and explain budget allocations and tax implications He aims to hear citizen priorities to guide next year budget plans.

Floyd downgraded to storm status off Florida coast

Hurricane Floyd weakened to a tropical storm but still lashed South Florida with heavy seas and gusts, threatening a ship and prompting a Coast Guard rescue of 25 Venezuelan crew members from the 400-foot Almallanera. Two men were plucked from the ocean as cargo shifted and the vessel listed amid 46 degree angles off Palm Beach.

Fire Devastates 11 Buildings in Crisfield Downtown

A massive blaze in Crisfield Maryland destroyed 11 buildings in the downtown business district, damaging lumberyard and hardware warehouses. More than 250 firefighters from 16 companies across three states fought the fire, aided by winds that spread the flames. Estimated damage reached 1.5 million dollars with power outages affecting about 300 homes and five businesses. No major injuries. 12 firefighters treated for smoke inhalation.
