Candidates vow to save Schrodel farm and seek landfills

Nine county commissioner candidates signed a pledge to seek alternative landfill sites if elected, urged by the Committee to Save the Schrodel Farm. Incumbent Sterling Bollinger declined. Illegal aliens arrested in raid on West Sixth Street

Several illegal aliens were nabbed and over 10 thousand dollars worth of crack and jewelry were seized during a raid on Taney Apartments on West Sixth Street Thursday night. Steven Robertson 44 of Frederick Dave Mitchell 18 of Washington DC and Michael Dixon 25 of Washington DC, all Jamaicans, were charged with cocaine offenses. A 16 year old from New York City was also charged. INS advised detainers will be filed and deportation is likely. Police described a tense raid with officers in gear ordering people down.

Convicted killer loses bid for retrial

Raymond Alexander Walker, 35, who killed William Linwood Thompson Sr. during an attempted robbery at National Trail Liquor Store in July 1976, lost his bid for a new trial in Circuit Court. Thompson, a 61 year old retired dairy farmer, died from two gunshot wounds. Walker was sentenced to life in prison on March 30, 1977, and his appeal was denied despite his claim of error. The victim’s widow Bertha Thompson expressed relief and lingering pain.

HDC delays bids on pond plans in Frederick

The Historic District Commission postponed bids on the Baker Park section of the Carroll Creek Flood Control project citing concerns about two proposed holding ponds. They may revisit the plan in two weeks to a month, as engineers push for cost and timing considerations.

Frederick to extend bus route for six month trial

Frederick city and county officials said buses will run earlier and expand into new territory starting Dec 1 for six months. The change could add about 170 riders daily on the extended route and lift overall system ridership as start times move from 7:30 am to 5:30 am.
