Bright October skies draw Pal-growers to the 74th annual Frederick Agricultural Society fair. Gates opened at 9 am as residents from Frederick and nearby counties arrived in large numbers for the opening day amid reports of strong attendance, promised financial success, and variety acts including the International Daredevils.
A fire at a Ratitex Nova Scotia home killed one woman and left five people missing or trapped as rescuers searched through the collapsed structure. A search continued for additional bodies as the building burned and smoke rose.

Five people died and several passengers were injured when a Milwaukee passenger train derailed near Guttenberg Iowa plunging into a creek. Among the dead were engineer Charis Strazinski and fireman Frank Mann as the train from Savanna Alabama to Lacrosse Wisconsin carried about 35 passengers including several local schoolchildren. The wreck occurred on a curve after the train plunged from a creek trestle into the stream bed and the cab and tender separated on impact.
