Curious Colonial Deed Leads to Theological Scheme
In Stratford Connecticut a land transfer of 900 feet behind a church triggers a tale of a curious compact. Thaddeus K. Peck agreed to donate the land to the Moth wéliat church in exchange for sermon lectures paid at 20 per hour plus $250 via a chain of lectures. Rev. Royal W. Raymond audited receipts totaling $220 with $20 more to be paid by the Methodists for a banquet. Peck, famed as a philosopher and inventor, defends his plan while critics call it a martyrdom.
