Fifty Years Of Rural Free Delivery Beginnings in 1896
In October 1896 four experimental rural mail routes started in Jefferson County West Virginia led by Postmaster General William L. Wilson. Two Indiana routes followed in Bartholomew County with Raleigh Norman first on the Hope line. Hartsville started late. Albert Hitchcock later built the boxed wagon to prevent freezing. George W. Cooper pressed for trial routes in Hawcreek. His son Kent Cooper led the AP. The early success spurred Congress to expand RFD nationwide.

Battle Looms Over Synthetic vs Natural Rubber Tires
The long predicted struggle between synthetic and natural rubber heats up as price controls bind both sides. Synthetic costs 12 to 30 cents a pound, natural 25 to 24 cents delivered, suggesting natural rubber must drop. With controls off, natural rubber may fall to about 22 cents, possibly lower. Government plans include selling or leasing synthetic plants to private industry while pushing free market for natural rubber. Passenger car tires now use synthetic rubber, with natural rubber reserved for heavy duty tires. Price ceilings on standard tires stand at 15.20 dollars, making natural-casing tires likely just under 16 dollars. this slim gap could spark intense competition and advertising.
