The eighty year old Robert and his wife, also eighty, were found dead in their Princeton area home. The wife died from a bullet wound to the stomach while seated at the dinner table. The husband was found dead in bed, a rifle on the floor. Authorities suspect the husband shot his wife and then killed himself with poison. McKinnie had been despondent and had threatened self harm.

Alfred G. Vanderbilt and two companions started from the Holland House at 5.55 AM hoping to beat a York to Philadelphia and back record. They arrived at the Holland House at 1.32 AM, three hours and two minutes behind schedule, blaming poor roads from Trenton to Philadelphia and Bristol. Seventy-two horses were used, with four-in-hand work for over half, and the return run began at 3.27 PM after a lengthy night drive. The crowd in Philadelphia cheered as Vanderbilt vowed to press on and try again to smash the record.
Baltimore reports the National Rivers and Harbors Congress adjourned after urging speedy canal project action. A resolution of confidence in President Roosevelt was ruled out as non germane and sent to a committee that reported nothing. Also noted is a separate Florida case and plans for Roosevelt to speak in New York on Thanksgiving at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument dedication.

In San Francisco on October 10 the Episcopal House of Bishops adopted canon 36 by 37 to 1, barring remarriage for any cause not existing before marriage. The measure aims to regulate solemnization of matrimony, with debate expected as deputies consider canon 37 on discipline of those married after divorce.
