Doctors urge Americans to get flu and pneumonia shots
The flu killed more Americans than usual last winter and bacterial pneumonia poses a growing threat. Medicare patients can get both vaccines free, but one third skip flu shots and 55 percent have not had pneumonia vaccines. Dr. Gregory Poland of Mayo Clinic calls this a public health emergency and notes unusual summer outbreaks potentially affecting up to 40,000 people, mainly travelers.

Flu shots urged as best defense this winter season
The CDC warns that winter flu remains the worst season though summer outbreaks occur in several states. Officials urge annual vaccination now through mid November and highlight pneumococcal vaccines for lifetime protection. High risk groups include those over 64 and people with chronic conditions.

seventeen million women at risk of sexually transmitted disease
Washington based AP reports that an Alan Guttmacher Institute study estimates 17 million American women are at risk because themselves or their partners had recent sexual partners. About 3.5 million unaware they face risk due to false beliefs in mutual monogamy. The study notes no clear drop in multi partner activity over a decade and urges condom use. Lawrence Finer led the analysis using three federal surveys.

Syphilis rate hits all time low in United States
ATLANTA AP The syphilis rate in the United States fell 19 percent last year to a record low 2.6 cases per 100 000, with 6 993 total cases. Half came from 28 counties, mostly urban, while about 80 percent of counties reported no new cases. Officials stressed continued elimination efforts and tied declines to treatment access and safer sex practices amid AIDS concerns. The South showed the highest rate at 5.1 per 100 000, and black rates remained substantially higher than whites though the gap narrowed since 1990.
