Circuit Court hears cases of Luther Smith and Samuel Luber tied to a jail pistol sale. Luber admitted selling a .32 caliber pistol to Grover Dixon for three dollars, later linked to burglaries of the Dertzbaugh and McCollister homes. Tyler, charged with home burglary, confesses and faces trial.
The Independent Hose Co. placed a Seagrave 500-gallon pumper in the engine house for county service. It features a fully enclosed body with long seats for firefighters and a closed cab. Suction sleeves and ladders are stored inside, and the centrifugal pump is top mounted. Formal tests await acceptance.
Rev. Dr. John H. Ness of York Pa was re-elected superintendent for a seventh term at the 149th annual session in Mechanicsburg. He urged deeper consecration and aggressive discipleship as local churches reported $23 384 paid on debt and multiple rebuilding efforts. the conference membership stood at 34 338 with several church transfers noted.
Rear Admiral Wilson Brown Jr a native of Pennsylvania will become superintendent of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis on February 1 succeeding Rear Admiral David Foote Sellers Admiral Sellers will reach retirement age February 4 with retirement effective March 1
In Rockville on Oct 7 Circuit Court Judge Charles W Woodward struck from the record a Montgomery county grand jury recommendation to dismiss the incumbent office holder described as accountant and or county auditor The judge ruled the reference exceeded the jurys authority and could not name Darby who petitioned for expungement He noted the jury may indict or ignore evidence and voided the improper entry
Mrs. Claggett E. Ramsburg Western Maryland vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary and guests installed officers at Francis X. Elder unit No. 121 in Emmitsburg on Tuesday evening. She was assisted by Mrs. Rice Mrs. Rhoads and Mrs. Paul Winnert. She will install officers of Morris Frock unit No. 42 in Hagerstown this evening and later installations are planned for Charles Harden unit No. 74 in Hagerstown and Steadman Keenan unit No. 98 in Brunswick with further October dates in the schedule.

James Wesley Geisler, 45, a well known resident near Adamstown, hanged himself in a barn on the farm he operated with shared ownership. The body dropped about ten feet after a support gave way, breaking his neck. Justice John F. Keller ruled death by own action after Dr. Charles H. Conley Jr. examined him. The death was reported to Thomas and Company, employers of the farm, and his family noted despondency over poor farm pay. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from his home with interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery Monrovia.
Two British steamers named Yorkbrook and Dover Abbey were captured off the northern Spanish coast by a Spanish insurgent trawler. The Admiralty said the vessels likely were inside territorial waters and had been warned of the risk. No British warships witnessed the capture during patrols.
Shanghai reports mass bombing raids by Japanese warplanes on Kwangtung and along the Canton to Hankow railway line. Chinese dispatches say eight Japanese planes were shot down. over 300 non combatants killed in towns along the route. 70 Chinese planes attacked, keeping the railway line from heavy damage.

Chicago reports a ransom note said to be from Ross abductors. Charles Ross, 72, was seized September 25 near Sycamore Illinois by three men after stopping his car. An official declined to confirm receipt while notes mailed to a Mrs Breckenridge were described.
Local fishermen near Shawano Wisconsin on October 7 reported a conservation mishap when a loading accident caused 20 000 perch fingerlings 3 000 bullheads and 3 000 blue gills to spill into Shawano lake.
Mrs Harry Ll Blapkins the 37 year old wife of Works Progress Administrator Harry L Hopkins died today at Garfield Hospital in Washington. She had been in poor health for a year and Hopkins was with her at the time of death.
Damage estimated at 300 dollars to one car on the Washington pike near Urbana last night at about eleven. W. W. Armstrong of Arlington Va and George Simon Jr of Columbus Ohio were involved. Both drivers fined five dollars for reckless driving and Simon fined fifteen dollars for driving without a license.
President Roosevelt secludes himself at Hyde Park to rest from a trans continental journey and ponder foreign and domestic issues. Officials expect no further public statements for some time and anticipate meetings with aides upon returning to Washington.
