A report says President may have written to United Mine Workers leader John Mitchell asking him to urge miners to end the strike. The letter, if released, would push Congress and Pennsylvania to pass remedial coal region legislation. No reply from Mitchell is recorded, and the president plans Oyster Bay departure in about 19 days, staying until mid November.
