Fire at Fort Detrick Damages 6.75 Million Walter Reed Addition
Officials surveyed Fort Detrick this morning after a Monday afternoon blaze at the Walter Reed unit expansion damaged the Medical Building area. No injuries were reported and authorities said no biological matter was involved. Unofficial loss estimates ranged from 50 000 to 75 000 dollars as fire crews stopped the flames by 2 pm and continued to cool hotspots. Building materials and steel work suffered heavy damage with potential further losses from smoke and subsequent repairs. The project began in 1966 with completion targeted for October 1971.
