City warns Denrich Associates to reopen a downtown supermarket at 311 N Market St within 30 days or face mortgage default and possible foreclosure. Tesoro chain owner bought the building in 1996 after Carmack Jays failed in 1995, leaving a yearlong vacancy since October 1998.
Fort Detrick will get about 28 million dollars from the Army over four years to clean up groundwater contamination beneath the post. An Army spokesman said average annual spending will be seven million dollars for this year and the next three, targeting decades of dumped solvents TCE and PCE. Contaminant levels have reached up to 24 000 times the safe limit, with health risks including liver kidney and nervous system damage and potential cancer from long term exposure.
River and Trail Outfitters in Knoxville hosts Blair Witch themed hikes through Burkittsville woods on Fridays and Saturdays in October and November. On Oct 6 Frederick will officially recognize German American culture marking the 316th anniversary of German settlement. Edgar Grunwald of Middletown petitioned Mayor Jim Grimes about four weeks earlier, receiving a swift proclamation. Grunwald praised the mayor and cited pride in German American heritage and Frederick’s historical ties to Germany through Schiffer.
San Antonio based Clear Channel Communications to acquire AMFM Inc. for 16.7 billion dollars. AMFM includes WFMD and WFRE in Frederick, formed from Capstar and Chancellor mergers. Announcement says deal will take about a year to finalize and will yield 830 stations under Clear Channel. rivals warn antitrust scrutiny may follow.
Steven Dilley of Westminster reports a masked armed man at a traffic light on Opossumtown Pike intervened at 5:30 p.m. He described a black male in his late 20s wearing blue jeans and a gray pullover who pressed a gun to Dilley’s head and forced him into an approximately 50 mile drive along I-70 west to Hancock to steal his sport utility vehicle.
