Fallen heroes honored at National Fire Academy memorial
Thousands of firefighters families and supporters gathered at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg to honor 95 fallen firefighters from 33 states and Puerto Rico including four Maryland fatalities. Names were read as families received American flags and red roses. a candlelight vigil and a bronze plaque unveiling marked the 1998 remembrance. Maryland victims included David Brinkley John Kennedy Joseph Kroboth Jr and Preston Patterson. A Red Ribbon Run organized by Maryland State Police Superintendent Col David Mitchell paid tribute as sirens sounded countywide. National Fire Prevention Week activities accompanied the memorial weekend.

Cane incident leads to arrests during street festival

Rodeo Contester Dies After Bucking Steer Trample
Georgia resident Dean John Berkan 36 from Sacramento California died after bucking steer trampled him at the Atlantic Stampede 99 rodeo at Montgomery County Fairgrounds. He struck his head on a railing and fell beneath the animal. Police and medical examiner cited fatal head injuries. He was transported to Suburban Hospital in Wheaton where he died about 90 minutes later.

Canal and railroad unite as C O Canal center opens
