Clinton Announces Bosnia Cease Fire To Take Effect October

President Clinton said warring factions in Bosnia have agreed to a cease-fire set to begin October 10 and to hold talks in the United States on October 25 to finalize details. He cautioned that actions matter more than words as NATO resumes attacks and Croatian forces re-enter Bosnia. Richard Holbrooke led the U.S. peace effort, reporting the breakthrough from Sarajevo after meeting Bosnian President Alija Izetegovic.

Two Thousand Year Old Statue Unearthed Off Alexandria

Egyptian and French archaeologists used a tugboat crane and parachute to haul a 2000-year-old red granite statue torso from undersea ruins off Alexandria. Wind and waves challenged the retrieval as they aim to recover several relics including pieces of the Pharos lighthouse and a half-man, half-lion sphinx among 20 to 30 items planned for extraction in the coming days.

Mortgage lawyer uses provocative ads to boost closings

Rosalie Osias of Great Neck New York says her firm jumped from five closings weekly to 40 or 50 after starting provocative ad campaigns in trade publications in April. One image shows her in a pantsuit with sunglasses lounging with a golf club. The ad reads We don't play golf. We're too busy closing your loans. She said she sought male attention saying mortgage banking is an old boy network and she needed something sexual to get them to notice.

Fires force people from homes on Point Reyes coast

Brisk sea breezes fanned an illegal campfire into a wildfire that raced across 2000 acres on the Point Reyes peninsula destroying more than 40 buildings. About 1000 firefighters battled the blaze, setting firebreaks and cutting through brush to contain the spread.

Hurricane Opal weakened to a tropical storm after landfall in the Florida Panhandle, washing away beachfront and destroying dozens of homes in Mexico Beach. Power outages affected about 350,000 in Florida and 235,000 in Alabama, with authorities warning it could take days to restore electricity. The storm produced up to 5 inches of rain, high winds, and widespread damage as residents fled to shelters.
