Tornados strike Maryland counties cause widespread damage

Strong winds and a related tornado swept Frederick County and parts of central and northeastern Maryland. Debris trapped residents in Camp Springs, roofs were ripped from homes, trees downed, and thousands lost power with restoration by morning. Nine police crashes occurred between 3 and 9:30 pm, but injuries were not serious.

Middletown teen charged with kidnapping in newborn case

A 17 year old Middletown girl Tracy Ann Dennis was extradited to Maryland to face felony kidnapping charges in the disappearance of a friend's 3 month old daughter Felicia Nicole Burriss. Dennis faces adult charges and bail was set at 350000. FBI agents located the child in an apartment rented by a male friend.

Man receives life term for murdering wife in Hagerstown home

In Washington County Circuit Court Raymond Lloyd Humphrey received a life sentence for strangling his wife on April 24, 1994. His two daughters, ages 8 and 4, cope with their mother's death while in counseling and under guardianship of their maternal grandparents. Humphrey, who had been intoxicated, attacked on their wedding anniversary after his reconciliation pleas were denied. He also received an additional 20 years for rape. The sentencing affects the Ellinger Humphrey family as the children remain split between relatives and limited contact with their father.

Local Catholics prepare for Mass with Pope in Baltimore

Local Roman Catholics from St. John the Evangelist in Frederick and Holy Family in Middletown plan pilgrimages to Pope John Paul II’s Mass at Camden Yards. About 85 from Holy Family will ride two buses, while Frederick’s parish organized 13 buses for 45 people each. Admin staff report continued calls from hopeful participants as tickets were distributed by lottery.

Students tour NASA observatory by live TV link

Green Valley Elementary School students in Owings Mills toured a NASA observatory in California via a three way interactive video link with Maryland Public Television Hawaii and NASA Ames. The live broadcast from noon featured the Kuiper Airborne Observatory in Mountain View as part of MPTs Live from the program.
