Four soil tips pH salts and trace elements guidance
The Perennial Plants Association outlines four soil factors for growers and home gardeners. Matted by Paul A. Thomas from the University of Georgia warns high pH above 7 blocks manganese and iron uptake, while pH below 5 raises trace element absorption. optimal range is 5.0 to 6.5. Excess lime or fertilizer raises soluble salts measured in millimhos and can cause root burn. seeds tolerate under 0.75 mmbhos and established plants under 1.5 mmbhos. Thomas urges testing nitrogen forms and notes fertilizer composition like 20-20-20 may not suit all crops. many plants prefer high NO3 with low NH4. Magnesium and calcium buffering by lime is common, but excess can cause aerial problems. verify soil production accuracy before application.
