Mysterious heart disease kills two Carroll youths
Two Carroll County youths Monica C. Dean aged 9 of Westminster and Patrick A. Hoff aged 13 of New Windsor died within five weeks last spring from acute myocarditis a viral heart disease. Medical examiners caution the illness is rare and often mimics cold or flu symptoms. Doctors note diagnosis is difficult and emphasize awareness and early testing with EKG and brain scans.
