Washington reports Herold Stassen wrote to Soviet Premier Stalin urging a face to face talk aimed at stopping war drift. Vienna Strike Flop Shuts Down Communist Putsch Plan
Vienna reports that a Communist general strike failed to gain traction as tens of thousands of Austrian workers and police clashed with Communists at factories and rail hubs. Western intelligence said Cominform agents ordered a toned down movement and scrapped putsch plans modeled on 1948 Czechoslovakia. Early estimates pegged turnout at 5,000 for a Vienna city hall gathering, with many dispersing quickly.
